Face painting tips for a kids party

The most important face painting tips for a kids party are about safety: use cosmetic-grade face paint made for skin, never craft paint, and patch test first. After that, keep designs simple, set up a calm station near the slushie table, and plan for easy cleanup.
Face painting turns an ordinary birthday into a party kids talk about for weeks. You don't need to be an artist. You need the right paint, a few easy designs, and a smart setup.
Choose safe face paint
Buy face paint labeled for use on skin. Look for cosmetic-grade, water-based paint from a brand that lists its ingredients. Craft paint, acrylic paint, and markers are not made for faces and can irritate skin.
Glitter matters too. Use only cosmetic glitter made for skin. Craft glitter has sharp edges and doesn't belong anywhere near eyes.
Do a patch test
Some kids have sensitive skin. Before you paint a face, dab a small spot of paint on the inside of the wrist or forearm and wait a few minutes. If you see redness or itching, skip face paint for that child and offer a sticker or a temporary tattoo instead.
Ask parents about allergies when they RSVP. Don't paint over cuts, rashes, or broken skin.
Easy face painting designs kids love
Simple designs look great and go fast. Aim for two to three minutes per child so the line keeps moving.
- Cheek art. A heart, star, rainbow, or lightning bolt on one cheek. Fast and fun for toddlers.
- Butterfly. Two wing shapes around the eyes, with a dot body on the nose. Use two colors.
- Tiger or cat. Orange on the cheeks, a black nose, and three whiskers on each side.
- Superhero mask. A simple mask shape around the eyes in one bold color.
- Slushie cup. A small cup on one cheek with a striped straw. Match the colors to the flavors in the machine.
Post a picture menu at the station. Kids point to what they want, and you skip the long debate. For more games and crafts to run next to the face painting table, see our kids party activities guide and the kids and slushie parties hub.
Set up the station
Put the face painting table in the shade, close to the slushie table but not right next to it. Kids can grab a drink while they wait, and you keep sticky cups away from your brushes.
You need:
- Two chairs, one for you and one for the child
- A small table for paint, brushes, sponges, and water cups
- Baby wipes and paper towels
- A hand mirror so kids can see the result
- A trash bag
Keep a cup of clean water for rinsing brushes and change it often. Use a fresh sponge for each child when you can.
Plan the slushie side
Bright flavors match bright face paint. Blue Raspberry, Cherry Bomb, Green Sour Apple, and Strawberry Kiwi are colorful kid favorites. Our two-bowl machines serve two flavors at once, so kids get a choice. Every mix is alcohol-free until you add alcohol. If grownups want margaritas, put a margarita in one bowl and a slushie in the other, and label each side. Find more ideas in our guide to kids party slushie flavors.
One machine serves up to 100 guests. We deliver, set up, and show you how it works, then pick up and clean the machine. The machine needs 2 to 3 hours to freeze the first batch, so have a garden hose and water source ready when we arrive. See our kids slushie party page for more planning help.
Clean up the easy way
Most water-based face paint comes off with soap, warm water, and a soft washcloth. Send each child home with a wipe in a small bag. Wash brushes in mild soap at the end of the party and let them dry flat.
