How to host a kid friendly party with alcohol

A kid friendly party with alcohol works when you set up the kids side first and label both bowls. Pour a kids slushie in one bowl and a margarita in the other, put clear signs on each, and keep one adult at the margarita side the whole time.
Holiday season brings the biggest mixed crowds of the year: cousins, grandparents, neighbors, and a backyard full of kids. This post is the quick version. For the full rules on hosting, invitations, neighbors, and thank-you notes, see our party etiquette guide, and for the complete checklist, read party safety for a frozen drink party.
Set up the kids side first
Plan the kids bowl before you plan the margarita. Every mix is alcohol-free until you add alcohol, so the kids side is just a slushie with nothing added.
- Pick a flavor that looks nothing like the margarita. Blue Raspberry or Cherry next to a Lime Margarita is easy to tell apart from across the yard.
- Face the kids bowl toward the kids. Turn the machine so kids line up at their side and the margarita side faces the grownups.
- Freeze the kids bowl first. The first batch takes 2 to 3 hours to freeze, and kids tend to arrive hungry and thirsty.
Our kids party slushie flavors guide lists the flavors kids ask for most.
Label both bowls for a kid friendly party with alcohol
The two bowls can look alike once the drinks are in cups. Labels take the guessing out of it.
- Print our free leaded and unleaded bowl labels: "leaded" for the bowl with alcohol, "unleaded" for the alcohol-free bowl.
- Use one cup color for adults and another for kids. Different straws work too.
- Put a small sign by the cups that says which color goes with which bowl.
Keep an adult at the margarita side
Guests serve themselves from the machine, so name one adult to watch the margarita bowl while it's pouring. Trade off every 30 to 60 minutes so nobody misses the party.
- Add the alcohol yourself when you batch a new round, and keep the bottles out of reach.
- Keep the kids table and games away from the margarita side.
- Turn the margarita bowl to an alcohol-free flavor about an hour before the party ends.
The Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission's underage drinking page says making alcohol available to a minor is a Class A misdemeanor. That matters most at family parties and graduations where teens and adults mix. This is general guidance, not legal advice.
Go all slushie when it's a kids party
For a kids birthday or a class party, the simplest plan is two slushie bowls and no alcohol at the machine. Serve grownup drinks somewhere else, or skip them. Our kids birthday slushie bar guide shows how to set it up, and the kids and slushie parties hub has games, flavors, and favors.
If you expect a big crowd of both, a second machine gives the kids two flavors of their own and keeps the margarita on its own table. One machine serves up to 100 guests.
Plan the ride home before the first pour
Put a rideshare reminder on the invite, name your designated drivers, and keep the slushie side going for them, too. Water and food next to the drink station help everyone. Our free party invite maker has room for a note like "Kids slushies and grownup margaritas served."
Pick your date
Mixed-age parties fill weekends fast this time of year. Our machines are booked out Nov 21 to Dec 3, 2026, so look at Nov 3 to 20 or Dec 4 and later. Online booking needs at least 2 days' notice, but give yourself more for a holiday weekend.
We deliver, set up, show you how the machine works, and pick it up after, so you can spend the party with your family.
