Book club night theme
Plan a book club night theme with a two-bowl frozen drink machine: flavors matched to the book, an alcohol-free bowl, food, discussion ideas, and printables.

A book club night theme gets more fun when the frozen drinks match the book: Piña Colada for a beach read, Hurricane for a thriller, or Sangria and Peach Bellini for a cozy classic. Keep one bowl alcohol-free, such as Lemonade, for members who don't drink.
The look
Cozy and literary. Pull colors from the book's cover.
- Stacks of books as risers for the snacks
- Candles (battery ones are easiest) and soft lamps
- Throw blankets and floor pillows for extra seating
- A framed copy of the book cover next to the machine
- Old pages or quotes from the book as table confetti or place cards
The two bowls: match the book
| Book type | Bowl 1 | Bowl 2 |
|---|---|---|
| Cozy classic | Sangria | Peach Bellini |
| Beach read | Piña Colada | Strawberry Daiquiri |
| Thriller or mystery | Hurricane | Lime Margarita |
| Romance | Frosé | Strawberry Margarita |
| Southern fiction | Peach Margarita | Lemonade |
| Fantasy | Blue Hawaiian | Green Sour Apple |
| Memoir set in Texas | Lime Margarita | Cherry Limeade |
Give each drink a name from the book: a character, a place, or a famous line.
Alcohol-free bowl
Every mix is alcohol-free until you add alcohol. Lemonade, Vanilla, or an alcohol-free Peach Bellini all feel grown up enough for book club. If members bring kids, a Strawberry or Cherry slushie keeps them happy while the adults talk. Label both bowls.
Rim and garnish
- Chocolate Cocktail Sugar on Sangria or Strawberry Margarita
- Sweet Heat Cocktail Sugar on Peach Bellini or Peach Margarita
- Lime Margarita Salt on Lime Margarita
Garnish with orange slices for Sangria, peach slices for Bellini, and a cherry for the kids.
Food ideas
- A cheese board with crackers, grapes, and fig jam
- Food from the book's setting: tamales for a Texas story, crab dip for a coastal one
- Mini sandwiches and a fresh salad
- Brownies, lemon bars, or cookies
- A dessert inspired by a scene in the book
Games and activities
- Discussion cards: write questions on index cards and draw one at a time.
- Rate the book: guests drop a cup sleeve or token in jars marked 1 to 5.
- Book swap: everyone brings a book they loved to trade.
- Quote match: read a quote and guess the character.
- Pick the next book: vote by secret ballot.
Printables
Make the invitation on our party invite page with the book title and a drink pairing. Then print:
- Bowl labels with each drink's book inspired name
- Discussion question cards
- A rating card for the book
Our party tools page has more planning helpers. For more flavor pairs, see our two-bowl flavor pairings guide.
Planning note
Book clubs are usually small, so one machine with one mix per bowl is plenty: one mix serves about 20 guests. Unopened mixes are refunded at pickup. We set up 2 to 3 hours before the party, and the first batch takes 2 to 3 hours to freeze. Indoors, the machine needs a standard 110 volt outlet on its own circuit and a sturdy table, plus a garden hose and water source ready when we arrive.
