Retirement party theme

Plan a retirement party theme around a two-bowl margarita machine: lime and sangria bowls, a kids slushie for the grandkids, food, activities, and printables.

Margarita machine set up in an office

A retirement party theme starts with the retiree's favorite drink: put a Lime Margarita in one bowl, Sangria in the other, and build the decor around what they plan to do next. Swap one bowl for Cherry Limeade, alcohol-free, when grandkids and non-drinkers come along.

The look

Pick a sub theme that fits the retiree, then choose colors to match.

Sub theme Colors Decor ideas
The next chapter Navy, cream, gold Stacks of books, a "Chapter 2" sign
Gone fishing Blue, green, tan Tackle boxes, fishing poles, a "Gone fishing" sign
Beach bound Turquoise, sand, coral Flip flops, beach balls, a map
Career tribute Company or field colors Old badges, photos, tools of the trade
Officially retired Black, gold, silver Clocks stopped at quitting time, gold balloons

Hang a photo timeline of the retiree's career near the drink table so guests chat while they wait.

The two bowls

Option Bowl 1 Bowl 2
Crowd pleaser Lime Margarita Sangria
Celebration Lime Margarita Peach Bellini
Beach bound Piña Colada Mango Margarita
Office classic Lime Margarita Strawberry Margarita

Kids and alcohol-free bowl

Every mix is alcohol-free until you add alcohol. Grandkids love Cherry Limeade or Strawberry, and coworkers who are driving appreciate an alcohol-free choice. Fill one bowl alcohol-free, or rent a second machine with two slushies, and label every bowl.

Rim and garnish

  • Lime Margarita Salt on Lime Margarita
  • Tajín Classic Seasoning on Mango Margarita
  • Chocolate Cocktail Sugar on kids cups

Garnish with lime wheels, orange slices for the Sangria, and a cherry for the kids.

Food ideas

  • The retiree's favorite restaurant food, catered or picked up
  • A taco bar or fajita bar for easy serving
  • A cake with a retirement message or a favorite quote
  • A snack table with chips, salsa, and queso
  • Fruit and veggie trays for grazers

Games and activities

  • Memory jar: guests write a favorite story about the retiree.
  • Advice for retirement: cards with prompts like "Your first trip should be..."
  • Retiree trivia: how well do coworkers know their history?
  • Slideshow: photos from the early years to now.
  • Toasts: schedule a short toast while everyone holds a frozen drink.

Printables

Make the invitation on our party invite page with a headline like "Officially retired." Then print:

  • Bowl labels: "Margarita (21 and up)" and "Alcohol-free slushie"
  • Memory and advice cards
  • A trivia sheet

Planning note

Office retirement parties often happen on weekday afternoons. Same-day drop-off and pickup is an option, and online booking needs 2 days' notice. One machine serves up to 100 guests, and one mix serves about 20. We set up 2 to 3 hours before the party and need a standard 110 volt outlet on its own circuit, a sturdy table or our rolling cart, and a garden hose.
